Boron’s Trial By Fire

Prof. Dr. Zafer Üstündağ, Head of the Department of Chemistry at Kütahya Dumlupınar University, and Research Assistant Merve Gençoğlu conducted a scientific experiment titled "Boron’s Trial by Fire" at "BilimFest," an event organized under the TÜBİTAK 4007 Science Festivals support program. During the day-long event—aimed primarily at middle school students—approximately 120 participants were given a hands-on demonstration of the flame-retardant properties of the element boron. Through this initiative, the industrial applications of boron—one of the most strategic underground resources for both the region and the country—were effectively introduced to the younger generation, framed within the context of sustainable waste management and the science of chemistry.

Orientation Event for 1st-year Chemistry Department Students – Fall 2026–2027 Semester

An institutional orientation program was held for first-year Chemistry Department students for the Fall Semester of the 2026-2027 academic year. Attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Letters, Prof. Dr. Bülent Zeybek; Vice Dean Prof. Dr. Orhan Murat Kalfa; Head of the Chemistry Department Prof. Dr. Zafer Üstündağ; and the department's entire academic staff, the event provided strategic advice to students—who are just beginning their higher education journey—on academic development, laboratory discipline, and career planning. Enriched by interactive exchanges where students introduced themselves and shared their academic expectations, the program was successfully concluded with the aim of accelerating the students' adaptation to university life and strengthening their institutional ties with the academic staff.

Academic Board Opening Meeting for The 2026-2027 Academic Year Held At Our Faculty

At the Academic Board Opening Meeting for the 2026-2027 Academic Year held within our faculty, the activities of the Chemistry Department and our goals for the upcoming term were presented. The meeting took place at the Germiyanoğlu Yakup Bey Hall of the Kütahya Dumlupınar University Faculty of Arts and Sciences, attended by our Dean, Prof. Dr. Bülent Zeybek; Vice Deans Prof. Dr. Orhan Murat Kalfa and Asst. Prof. Dr. Nükhet Akalın Bingöl; department heads; and the faculty members and academic staff serving in our faculty. Organized to enhance our faculty's academic performance and plan for the new term, the meeting addressed the past activities and future projections of all departments. In this context, a presentation covering the Chemistry Department's academic activities and scientific research and development efforts was also delivered. Following the successful completion of presentations by all departments, the meeting concluded with our best wishes for a prosperous new academic year for our entire faculty—especially our Chemistry Department family—as well as for our university and students; we look forward to a successful and productive academic term.

Chemistry Department Meeting

On June 16, 2026, faculty members from the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Kütahya Dumlupınar University, convened for a strategic planning meeting regarding activities for the 2026/2027 Academic Year Fall Semester. During the meeting, the distribution and allocation of courses among faculty members were determined based on their respective academic divisions. The session, which also comprehensively addressed academic goals for the upcoming term and innovations aimed at enhancing educational quality, concluded with the hope that the new academic year would be productive for both the department and the students.

2025/2026 Spring Semester İme Presentations Event

Final-year students from the Department of Chemistry at Kütahya Dumlupınar University delivered professional presentations on June 15, 2026, during the Workplace-Based Professional Training (İME) evaluation meeting. Held at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences A-Block Meeting Hall, the event was chaired by Department Head Prof. Dr. Zafer Üstündağ and attended by Dean Prof. Dr. Bülent Zeybek. During the meeting, which was also attended by department faculty members, students successfully presented the work they had conducted across various fields of chemistry, including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, porcelain, pesticides, fertilizers, paints, automotive, and textiles. These presentations demonstrated how the students had transformed their theoretical knowledge into strong practical experience in the field; additionally, encouraging data regarding post-graduation employment prospects were shared. While the majority of students who trained at industrial facilities reported having reached preliminary agreements to work with their host companies after graduation, those who trained at public institutions shared information regarding the requirements for future employment within those organizations. These significant first steps taken by the young chemists into the professional world were met with great satisfaction and appreciation by all the faculty members present.

Fedek Accreditation and Certificate of Appreciation Presentation Ceremony

At a ceremony held in the Rector's office, Rector Prof. Dr. Süleyman Kızıltoprak presented accreditation documents to the Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics departments of the Faculty of Science and Letters. Specifically, the Chemistry Department received a renewal of its accreditation, while the Physics and Mathematics departments were awarded accreditation for the first time by the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Academic Programs in Science, Literature, Science-Letters, and Language-History-Geography Faculties (FEDEK). During the ceremony, the accreditation certificate was presented to the Head of the Chemistry Department, Prof. Dr. Zafer Üstündağ. Additionally, certificates of appreciation were awarded to the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Letters, Prof. Dr. Bülent Zeybek, and to the Deputy Heads of the Chemistry Department, Asst. Prof. Dr. Halil İlkimen and Asst. Prof. Dr. Elif Aksun Baykara, in recognition of their significant contributions to the successful completion of the accreditation process.

2025-2026 Department of Chemistry Graduation Ceremony

Our department's 2025-2026 Academic Year Graduation Ceremony was held with great enthusiasm on June 19, 2026, at 14:00 in the Şair Şeyhi Conference Hall. Hosted by Research Assistant Merve Gençoğlu, the ceremony was attended by Kütahya Dumlupınar University Rector Prof. Dr. Süleyman Kızıltoprak, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Prof. Dr. Bülent Zeybek, department faculty members, our graduates, and their esteemed families. Chemistry Department Head Prof. Dr. Zafer Üstündağ delivered the opening speech, highlighting the graduates' academic and professional development processes and expressing the pride felt in sending them off. Subsequently, Fatma Ceyda Ergen—the top-ranking student of the Class of 2026—took the podium to share her thoughts and feelings, extending her gratitude to everyone who contributed to their journey of success. Following the opening speeches, all graduating students recited the professional oath, led by Research Assistant Gülcan Üner. After the oath-taking ceremony, Rector Prof. Dr. Süleyman Kızıltoprak and Dean Prof. Dr. Bülent Zeybek congratulated the graduates, offered valuable advice regarding their future professional lives, and wished them continued success. During the award presentation ceremony honoring the top-ranking students, Prof. Dr. Cengiz Yenikaya presented the achievement plaque and certificate to the department's top student, Fatma Ceyda Ergen, while the achievement plaque and certificate for the second-ranked student, Sena Kolay, were presented by Vice Dean Prof. Dr. Orhan Murat Kalfa and the third-ranked student of the department, Sıla Öztürk, were presented with plaques and certificates of achievement by the Head of Department, Prof. Dr. Zafer Üstündağ. Following the presentation of achievement certificates to all students and the expression of best wishes for their professional careers, a group commemorative photo was taken. After the photo session, faculty members, graduates, and parents gathered in the laboratory setting to reminisce about the fond memories shared during the educational journey, thereby concluding the ceremony.
